look the beat

The documentary The Sound of Belgium explores the story of Belgian dance music. From the dance halls with Decap organs to the golden days of PopcornFrom EBM and New Beat to Belgian House and Techno. The Sound of Belgium goes in search of the spirit of a nation, by exploring the history of Belgian’s popular music and the people that danced to it.

legendary belgian dance halls

From top to bottom:

2x Boccaccio in Destelbergen. Founded in 1963 as a party hall. One year later a jukebox was added and the first dancing was born. It was a diamond shaped venue which was crowded with people from all over Europe wanting to hear this new kind of music: New Beat.

2x Mega House Tempel Barocci in the early 90s. Along the Meirseweg in Zundert.

Carré in the early 90s. Along the A12 highway in Willebroek. Built from the remains of the temporary 'Côte d'Or' pavilion for World Expo 58 in Brussels.

james lee

After seeing this photo report on Contemporary Art Daily, I began searching into the artist James Lee Byars and came upon this new online archive initiative by the Museum for Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) > Ensembles > on which they systematically digitalize everything they have in their archive about one specific artist: photos of visits, invitation cards, artist books, sketches, texts,... The next archive coming up online is that from James Lee Byars. Soon everything will be put online!
The photos from the stretched figure in the grass were shot in 1976 for Shadow of an Extra-Terrestrial (The Black Giant of Antwerp).
