Tuesday 30 July 1935, the launch of the first Penguin edition. It was for sale for 6 pence. The basic horizontal tripartite division of the covers, as well as the penguin itself, were divised by Edward Young. The colour used to indicate subject matter: initially just orange for fiction, green for crime, dark blue for biography, cerise for travel&adventure, red for plays.
