Artist Guillaume
Bijl made Feestelijke beeldenreeks (Festive
Images), a series of six statues in front of the
three entrances to the RAI in Amsterdam. They make up a set of three
couples in painted aluminium: a giant and giantess, illusionists and stilt
walkers, until up to 7,5 meters in height.
The 'Reuzen' or 'Giants
of Flanders' form a true folkloric tradition in Belgium (first referenced in 1359). Every old city
has its own giant or family of giants. They walk out on Feast Days
only.
